1950 Southern Cross Generator set Restoration registry details Running again after 30 years This Generator set was originally used on Flinders Island . (about 20 km north of Cape Portland on the North east tip of Tasmania Australia.) It was Purchased by a grazier at Avoca, (north Tasmania) and used to run a shearing shed. When mains power was connected around 1970 the motor was delegated to the paddock. When collected in late 2005, (See bottom photo) the motor was complete but seized. It was still on the original base, but other parts including items like the fuel tank, fuel tank stands, and the water tank) were scattered around the property. The restoration was started 1907 and completed in November of that year. Having spent many years out in the elements many parts had deteriorated. New rings and bearings, an injector and pump overhaul was required also many small items needed to be refurbished, replaced, or rebuilt with a helping hand from mate who is a fitter and turner. The end result was a five hour run to display the now running Generator set at the Huon show on Saturday 17th November. It ran sweetly and never missed a beat, but there is still a fair ammount of work to complete the restoration. Future plans include finding an item for it to work, so it can be displayed as a working model. Currently this engine does vibrate on its trolley, and the water tank is very boxy and a little unattractive so it is intended to have it painted with the addition of some classic scroll work and signage Any advise, or contact with other owners of this or similar engine would be greatly appreciated, and can be done Through this web page via contact with the Southern Cross engine registrar who will forward any message.
